Felix Götze scored a late equaliser against his former club to earn Augsburg a point at the Allianz Arena, and end Bayern Munich’s winning start to the season.
Goals: 1-0 Robben (48′), 1-1 Götze (87′)
Augsburg upset Bayern’s rhythm in the opening minutes with some high pressing, but the hosts soon had control of possession and went close when Renato Sanches ghosted past Jan Moravek and Daniel Baier and dragged a shot just wide. Having made five changes from Saturday’s 2-0 win over Schalke – and with Leon Goretkza in an unfamiliar position at left-back – Bayern looked a little out of sorts throughout the opening period, with Sandro Wagner heading off target from a teasing Joshua Kimmich cross and Sanches blasting high and wide after being put through by Arjen Robben. Augsburg keeper Andreas Luthe produced a couple of superb saves to deny Wagner – inadvertently played in Raphael Framberger – and Serge Gnabry, who unleased a stinging low drive after Javi Martinez’s marauding run. Robben then found Sanches unmarked at the back post from a corner, but the Portuguese snatched at it once again as Bayern went in without a goal at half-time for the first time this season.
The deadlock was finally broken just three minutes into the second half. Gnabry did brilliantly to control a long ball forward and squared unselfishly for Robben, who cut inside before firing home a trademark effort. Two minutes later, Sanches found himself one-on-one with Luthe, but once again he failed to find the back of the net, as the visiting keeper boosted his chances of getting the nod ahead of Fabian Giefer as Augsburg’s No.1. Manuel Baum’s side rarely threatened, with captain Baier pulling an effort wide and Martin Hinteregger rifling a free-kick high into the stands – and yet several minutes after Franck Ribery had a goal ruled out for offside, the visitors rescued the unlikeliest of points as Felix Götze chested in from close range following a corner. Thiago almost grabbed a winner for Bayern at the death, but they had to settle for a point as Niko Kovac’s perfect start at the helm came to an end.
