Goals: 1-0 Haller (21′ pen.), 2-0 Jovic (27′), 3-0 Jovic (34′), 4-0 Haller (50′), 4-1 Lukebakio (53′), 5-1 Jovic (55′), 6-1 Jovic (69′), 7-1 Jovic (72′)

Frankfurt were oozing confidence from their recent revival which, including their UEFA Europa League win over Lazio, had seen them win their past three games in a row. It took them just 21 minutes to take the lead at the Commerzbank Arena with Sebastien Haller converting a penalty which had been awarded by Video Assist. Filip Kostic’s fine cross was turned in acrobatically by Jovic to make it two, before the inspired Serbian grabbed his second of the game from a Haller assist to give the hosts a comfortable lead with ten minutes still to be played in the first half.

Their lead was raised to four goals when Haller joined Jovic on a brace, keeping his composure and confidence to chip past Michael Rensing. Fortuna’s half-time substitute Ngandoli Lukebakio grabbed a consolation minutes later, but any joy at that goal was short lived with Jovic restoring the Eagles’ four-goal advantage within two minutes. An injury to Kevin Trapp, which saw the German custodian leave the field before an hour was up, slightly dampened Frankfurt’s spirits, but Jovic lifted them again with his fourth as Fortuna were hit for six. Jovic was not done there, though, and he headed in a Haller cross to put the cherry on top of a magnificent night for both him and for high-flying Frankfurt.
