Brace yourself for Timo Werner: RB Leipzig's master of the two-goal haul and MD13's Man of the Matchday

- in Bundesliga

They say good things come in threes, but for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, two is the magic number.

The 22-year-old striker hit a brace in his team’s 2-0 win at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 13, a result that lifted Ralf Rangnick’s side up to third in the standings and now just a point behind Gladbach.

Werner’s goals took him to eight in the Bundesliga this season, a respectable tally made all the more remarkable by the fact they have all been scored in pairs. That’s right, it was the Germany international’s fourth double of the campaign, following braces against Hannover, Nuremberg and Hertha Berlin.

“I was simply in good form today, like the rest of the team,” Werner told bundesliga.com after the final whistle. “When you play like this then you will score goals – not just me but the other strikers too in the last games. We have a lot of quality up front and we showed that again today.”

It was perhaps unsurprising that Werner should find the target given his record against the Foals. Leipzig have played Gladbach five times now, with Werner notching five of his team’s eight goals against them – and providing one assist – en route to registering three wins and two draws.

His strikes on Matchday 13 were the just reward for an outstanding performance all round. Werner found the net with two of his four shots on goal and he put in more sprints than anyone else in a Leipzig shirt (32).

But for the striker, the collective is all that counts: “Everything’s good now. The distance to Gladbach would have been big otherwise. Instead of being seven points behind them it’s now only one. Anything is possible. If we play like that anything is possible this season.”
