Josh Sargent’s full first-team debut with Werder Bremen would appear to be imminent, with the club’s coach Florian Kohfeldt the latest – and highest profile – name at the Weser Stadion to vouch for the promising young American forward.
Sargent joined Bremen from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida last January, but was only eligible to play for Die Grün-Weißen’s first team on turning 18 in February. If six goals and two assists in 10 appearances with the U23s hinted at his talent, then his goal in the USMNT’s 1-1 draw against Peru on Wednesday appear to have removed any doubts.
“This period in which [Sargent] plays exclusively in the U23s is over,” said Kohfeldt of the player who now has two goals in just five senior international caps. “He looks to be a long way beyond that now.”
Sargent, who is just the third player after Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic and New England Revolution’s Juan Agudelo to score twice for the US before his 19th birthday, could feature as soon as Bayer Leverkusen’s trip to Bremen on Matchday 9.
“It was a nice goal,” concluded Kohfeldt. “I’ll be happy to have him back here.”
