Montpellier capture Korean international

Montpellier Hérault SC have announced the signing of South Korean international attacker Yun Il-Lok.

The 27-year-old winger arrives at the Stade de la Mosson from Yokohama F Marinos of Japan, with Montpellier not revealing the length of the contract.

“I am delighted that Yun has joined us. He is the first Korean to play for us and I hope things go well for him, and that he is able to bring something extra to the team,” said the Montpellier president, Laurent Nicollin.

Yun – who follows compatriots Suk Hyun-Jun, of Stade de Reims, and Hwang Ui-Jo of Girondins de Bordeaux to France’s top flight – was among the leading scorers in his native K League last year while on loan at Jeju United, and previously won the Korean title with FC Seoul.

He joins a Montpellier team who are fighting for European qualification this season, but coach Michel Der Zakarian had been eager to strengthen his attacking options to take some of the pressure off Andy Delort and Gaëtan Laborde.

However, the club hope to announce another new attacking signing before the January transfer window closes, and are reportedly close to a deal to take the Ivorian forward Roger Assalé from Swiss side Young Boys.

“We have told them that the offer we made last week still stands. We are not in agreement on two or three points, but we will not move any further,” said Nicollin, according to the sports daily L’Equipe.
